Walking Washington Park’s Less Visited Byways, Gardens, and Landmarks
Date: Saturday, October 7th
Time: 10am-1:00 pm
Leader: Laura Foster

Description: Explore now-serene parts of the park once impacted by violent geologic upheaval. Discover the stories behind the city's historic reservoirs, a focus of conflict from their origins in the 1890s to today. The original 1871 entrance to Washington Park is now little used but welcomes visitors to a densely wooded hillside rich with history and beauty. Become an urban archeologist as we investigate remains of the park's 1880-era zoo site and discover how Forest Park was created. The guide will have a portfolio of historic photos to share at various points along the walk. The walk will cover a 3- to 4-mile route that includes paved trails, steep and uneven stairs, and hills. Bring water and a sturdy pair of walking shoes or boots. Driving directions and meeting locale will be sent to registered participants via an e-mail sent out later this week.

Hike leader biography: Laura O. Foster is the author of Portland Hill Walks: Twenty Explorations in Parks and Neighborhoods, published in April 2005 by Timber Press.

Sounds like a lot of fun. We're going to Chicago and Madison, Wisconsin this weekend for a wedding. We'll be staying with friends in Chicago, and maybe going to the museum to check out the King Tut exhibit. Playing soccer tonight and tomorrow is Ultimate Frisbee.

fun! and little R might have your head if you tell him you saw King Tut live! ;) you sound like quite active... something i haven't been in quite a while. i think i've gained like 10 lbs. and yes, i know, i know, a small size 8 is better than a big size 4... you'll be happy to know i'm eating and quite healthy too! :)

There's nothing wrong with gaining weight when you were too skinny to start with. According to your pictures, you look pretty and a lot more healthy, so keep those 10 pounds. I'd rather weigh more and feel healthy than be gaunt and skinny.
