just in...

amy, a really good friend of mine from the ATL, is coming to visit me in mid-august ~ she just sent to me her flight itinerary with DONE! written in the subject line. nice, very nice... and mom, i got blueberries, raspberries, a sweet onion, friskee and a huge handful of basil. i could sniff basil like it were not tomorrow. maybe that is what jehan smelled when sniffing her dolly as a child. and jen, the art museum awaits us on friday and sauvie island on the 4th:

how do i get to sauvie island from portland, oregon via bike?

hi natalie, thanks for getting in touch. there's a great tool for finding bike-specific routes. it's like mapquest for bikes. just type in your start and end address and you'll get the route. here's the link.
http://tripplanner.bycycle.org. i don't know the exact streets but from downtown you'd need to get over to NW and take thurman to highway 30. take 30 all the way to the sauvie island exit...about 10 miles north.

how safe is biking on highway 30?

that is of course a matter of personal preference. for the beginning rider, it would be much better to do it with a larger group of cyclists (safety in numbers). it is a major route for many cyclists...but i doubt a newbie rider (or tourist) would enjoy it on the weekday. on weekends it is much nicer because there's so much less traffic and far fewer big rigs. really it comes down to the personal comfort level of the person for riding near fast moving cars. there is a shoulder the whole way...but again the cars are moving at 40-60+ mph. jonathan
